Thrift is defined as having the capacity and propensity to use time and money efficiently and to display restraint so that one can reach a short- or long-term goal or purpose. Research has shown that thrift is related to elevated levels of environmental conservation and self-esteem while being negatively related to cigarette smoking (Kasser 2005).
